Unveiling Of Mural

Join Stailc81 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1981 Hungerstrike as we unveil a new mural dedicated to the ten brave men who gave their lives for Irish freedom and the Five Demands as they fought Britain’s policy of criminalisation.

Stailc 81’s aim is not only to remember the courage and sacrifice of the H-Block martyrs and their comrades, but to celebrate their lives and their ultimate victory over those who sought to criminalise them.

The unveiling will take place at Glenties Flats complex, Falcarragh Drive, Lenadoon, West Belfast, at 2PM on Saturday the 24th of July. Our guest speaker will be Tommy McKearney from The Moy, County Tyrone.

Tommy McKearney was on the blanket protest in the H Blocks for three years and was on the first hunger strike in 1980, refusing food for 53 days. He then went on to spend more years in gaol. Recently, McKearney authoured the book The Provisional IRA: From Insurrection to Parliament.
The event will be chaired by Lenadoon native and member of the Stailc ’81 memorial committee, Pádraic MacCoitir. Pádraic was on the blanket protest for two and a half years in the late 1970s and was imprisoned a number of times spending 15 years in Crumlin Road and Long Kesh prisons.
